I believe that my best piece of work in Photoshop this semester was my “Think Big” project. I really enjoyed working on this project because I got to take my own digital photograph and use many different tools. For this project, the Layer Mask tool was the main tool that I used. I also used a black and white gradient for my background. I chose the bevel/emboss and outer glow effects to add to the “THINK BIG” title.
When I used the Layer Mask tool, I moved my own digital photographs onto the gradient background using the move tool. Then using the Transformation tool (Ctrl+T), I shrunk down my pictures to make “Stuart Little sized” compared to the Internet photos I saved. Once the pictures were a small enough size, I added a Layer Mask to them. Using the Paintbrush Tool and making sure the foreground color was black, I zoomed in and used the paintbrush to mask out extra background from the original picture. I also had to mask out some of my fingers from the mini me hanging off the popcorn so that it looked like I was actually hanging off the lid of the popcorn bucket.
Using the Layer Mask tool was the hardest part of my project. Masking out the background really had to be spot on to make the mini me's look like they were actually on the Internet pictures. I had to make sure that I didn't mask out something that was supposed to be there, such as a chuck of my arm, or that I didn't leave something from the original picture.
To make the gradient background, I chose my two colors (black and white) and selected a linear gradient. Then I drug my cursor from the upper right corner to the lower left corner so that there would be a dark black in the right and it would fade into white as it approached the left. This section of the project was definitely one of the easier parts.
As for the "THINK BIG" title, I used Rosewood Std font and then increased the leading on the two lines so that the spacing between them widened. I added two layer effects to my wording. I bevel and emboss the words and also added a yellow outer glow. I thought that these effects made the words appear like they were on an old movie theater sign, which fit perfectly with my theme. These additions to my project were also extremely easy.
I think that my strength of my project was the originality of my theme. Nobody else had a movie based theme in my class. I also think that my selection/masking of my photo was very strong. My pictures fit with the Internet pictures and the scaling of my pictures to the Internet pictures makes me look small which was the point. My weakness on this project was that the picture of me hanging off the popcorn looks a little disproportional I could have used the Transformation tool to make my head not look so squished down.
Over all, I believe that this project turned out the best for me.
